Why I love Punjabi movies

When I think of Punjabi culture I think of cool music with drums and lot of dancing, great bargainers, turbans on men, endless colorful sarees and weddings with huge amount of people. I have been lucky to experience a little of all this while traveling around in India and making local friends, being a guest in their house and their weddings. I think of Punjabis as lively and very family focused people. And all this I can find in Punjabi movies as well.

Bhangra in the movies

Luckily the Bollywood style of films has a format of including at least 3 full length songs with dance numbers as part of the movie. This possibility is considered quite wired in other mainstream film industries, but thank good Indians are still keeping this style. I’m especially thankful for this when I am watching Punjabi movies. First of all it is really entertaining and a good way of promoting Punjabi songs among your crowd. But I also think it is great format of promoting your own culture, your folk dancing and music style - first of all among your own people and as important, to the viewers outside of your culture in India and around the world as well. This is definitely happening with bhangra, which is the main rhythm, drums and way of dancing – this is the style that we mostly refer to as Punjabi music. And as a result the culture is kept alive and is being promoted. Bhangra is extremely popular among youngsters and professional DJs, musicians around the globe. Plus Punjubi youth is motivated to follow the traditions of bhangra and experiment with it. This is definitely something that lot of cultures in the world could learn from. I understand that bhangra is something that Punjabis are proud of and always have been. This is the reason their films from old Punjabi movies till today have bhangra as organic part of their movies.

Here is a bhangra from an old movie Naya Daur from 1957:

The colors of Punjab

The other part I love about Punjabi movies is the style of dressing, the turbans, sarees with bright colors. It seems that Punjabi women like very bright colors and luckily there is no such understanding that bright should only go with youngsters. All this makes it possible to play so much with colors and it builds up great visuals that you can not get from films outside of India so easily.

Plus you get to see turbans on men. I find men with turbans very cute, ok some are very hot as well. There are many styles of turbans actually and it is not at all easy to manage it. Here is a video showing how to put your Punjabi turban on:

Punjabis put their traditions, cheerful mind and colorful taste into their movies and that is why I love them. And most of Panjabis I guess are really fit as well - it takes lot of energy to dance bhangra throughout the party actually. If for some reason you didn't really have a possibility to see Punjabi culture, the films are a great way for you to learn about it. To make it easy - watch one or two punjabi movies online and you get what I am talking about here. And then come to visit Punjab in India and feel it all around you one day.
