Have you watched Pancharangi, Aptharakshaka or Maleyali Jotheyali - great films from Karnataka in last years? It’s always good to learn about the culture before you travel to the country. If you are about to travel to Bangalore for example – that is Karnataka in India, there are Kannada movies online helping you in discovering little bit of the mindset of people in there. India is a big country with lots of different nationalities with their own languages. Around 50 million people speak Kannada language – more people than live in Spain for example. This is so big community that they have their own film industry. The same goes for Bengalis and their Tollywood film centre for example. Kannada films are also called as Sandalwood films – after the tree that grows mainly in Karnataka. I find it very cute as it were mainly sandalwood sticks and sandalwood soaps that I brought as a gift from Karnataka.

Feel the history of Kannada movies

Last year Kannada cinema celebrated its 75th birthday. If you would like to get some feeling about the history of this important part of Kannada community, start by watching some old Kannada movies online. It is probably not as easy, but if you search around a little, it is all worth it.

First there is Satya Harischandra - this is an epic film. You can find it online as well. Just be aware that it has been released several times and also in other Indian languages. In Kannada language it has been made in 1943 and 1965. In 2008 the film was re-released again in colored version.

I would also recommend looking for Sati Sulochana. This was the first talkie film in Kannada language. Some more special ones from really old times could also be Bedara Kannappa from 1954 or Hamsageethe from 1975. The famous directors from those times were example Dhruva Kumar from the beginning times of Kannada Cinema and Girish Karnad from 70s till nowadays, whose first big hit film was VamshaVruksh.

Famous actor from the beginning times was Gubbi Veeranna. But from the 50s and 60s it is all about Rajkumar. Actually Rajkumar got his first trainings for acting and singing from legendary Gubbi Veeranna itself. So in addition to acting he was also a beloved singer. He was such a meaningful legened to Kannada community that when he died in 2006, lot of people tried to commit suicide.

By watching Rajkumar films and listening to his songs, you definitely get closer to Kannada culture. While talking to local people in Karnataka, you can say that you have watched some films with Rajkumar. You would win their hart.

Here is Rajkumar in one beautiful song-clip:
