The best Punjabi songs for a party

I am a fan of Punjabi songs. This means that when I hear it in the party context, it always catches me and I end up on the dance floor enjoying myself a lot. Now that I have to organize a party for my friends in a Punjabi style, I had to start looking around for the music. This is not as easy as it seams – I have to take into account that not everyone likes to jump around while dancing here in my culture and I would like to present some kind of variety in the styles as well. This means that there should be some good old traditional bhangra, but maybe also something that would match to cultures outside of India and something for quieter mood as well.

Bhangra king

I do have a MP3 collection from India called “Bhangra King. Best of Malkeet Singh. Chal hun… Punjabi Golden Star.” This guy definitely sings from his hart and definitely gets the party going. I remember having a disco with my friends in the taxy in Delhi six years ago, just as we didn’t really know which place to go for parting. We asked the taxy driver to put this MP3 collection of Punjabi Bhangra songs on and drive around in the endless wide and empty streets of the city. It was hilarious, the music as a hit for sure. So I would use it at my party and recommend to others as well. His style is to mix traditional bhangra with poplar disco feeling of nowadays India. So if you are looking for new punjabi songs for your party, check out the latest from Malkeet Singh.

Old Punjabi songs

I found a very good web about Punjabi folksongs. You can watch video recordings of different prominent Punjabi singers and listen to audio tracks from really old times. In some case you can also download punjabi songs to your computer. Some of the songs come with lyrics word together with English translation. It’s great. Another good example on how Punjabis really know how to value and present their traditions. This is why I also love Punjabi movies – they really put bhangra as part of their popular culture, starting from the very old days.

And on this web I found some audio tracks presenting really older times of Punjabi music that are also for a bit quieter mood as I had been looking for: for example a song Budha Hoya Sheikh Farid sang by Chitra Singh and Jagjit Singh.

I also decided to show some videos to set the mood. I found out that Shaukat Ali is a famous and loved artist on this field.

So here is a video of Shaukat Ali singing:

The legend called Chamkila

Amar Singh Chamkila is considered as one of the most loved Punjabi musician. Although he is dead by now, his songs really stay in the harts of Punjabi people. But he has also got quite some criticism as well. This because he started to write and perform lyrics that were about relationships that were taboo, for example falling in love outside of your marriage. All this makes him even more interesting to me - someone who followed his hart and sang about what he really wanted. For sure I'll be presenting some of his songs with video at my party.

Here is one exciting video of Amar Singh Chamkila sining:
